Berwick-Upon-Tweed
Historic Berwick-Upon-Tweed is just a 5 minute drive away and offers a glimpse into a turbulant past. A walk around its walls provides excellent sea views and an opportunity to lookover the Elizabethian fortifications, the Barracks (English Heritage) and the fine architecture of this Georgian market town. It also provides all the modern amenities you expect including; coffee shops, places to eat and drink together with a range of food shopping (including Marks & Spencer food)
The mystical Holy Island, (separated from the mainland by a tidal causeway) is a fifteen minute drive from Bees cottage. It is home to Lindisfarne nature reserve where you can see wading birds and you might be lucky enough to hear the seals singing. The Island offers both natural beauty and history. The iconic Lindisfarne castle (National Trust) offers spectacular views and the ruins of Lindisfarne Priory (English Heritage) are surely worth a visit. The village has cafes, pubs and the famous ‘St Aidan’s Winery’ the home of ‘Lindisfarne mead’,
The nearby parish of Ford and Etal provides an excellent day out, with the ruins of a 14th century castle. (English Heritage and briefly captured by James IV of Scotland) At Heatherslaw there is a working corn mill and a narrow gauge steam railway. The site of the Battle of Flodden fought in 1513 (the largest battle fought between the two Kingdoms of England and Scotland) is also nearby.
